Flatfoot (Pes Planus)

Flatfoot, also known as “fallen arches,” occurs when the arch of the foot collapses or does not form properly. While flatfoot is normal in young children and often improves as they grow, persistent or painful flatfoot may need evaluation and treatment.
Types:
- Flexible Flatfoot– usually harmless, unless painful.
- Rigid Flatfoot– may cause pain and stiffness, often requiring treatment.
Causes & Risk Factors:
- Family history
- Loose ligaments or excess fatty tissue in childhood
- Tarsal coalition (abnormal bone connection)
- Tendon injuries
Symptoms:
- Flattened arch
- Outward-turned heel
- Pain in the foot, ankle, leg, or lower back
- Difficulty with walking or sports
- Shoe discomfort
Treatment Options:
- Observationfor painless flexible flatfoot in children
- Activity modificationto avoid pain-inducing activities
- Custom orthoticsfor arch support
- Physical therapyand stretching exercises
- Supportive footwear
- Surgery(rarely needed) for severe or painful cases
