Bunion Corrective Surgery
A bunion (hallux valgus) is a painful bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe. Over time, the big toe drifts sideways toward the smaller toes, causing pain, swelling, difficulty in finding footwear, and problems with walking.
When conservative measures (such as wider shoes, orthotics, splints, or pain medications) fail to provide relief, bunion corrective surgery may be recommended.
Goals of Surgery
- Relieve pain
- Correct toe alignment
- Restore foot function
- Prevent worsening deformity
Types of Bunion Surgery
Depending on the severity of the deformity and patient’s needs, our surgeons at COSM may perform:
- Osteotomy– Cutting and realigning the bone.
- Exostectomy– Removing the bony bump from the side of the big toe joint.
- Arthrodesis– Fusing the affected joint (used in severe deformities or arthritis).
- Minimally Invasive Surgery– Small incisions with quicker recovery in selected patients.
Surgical Procedure
- Performed under regional or general anesthesia.
- The surgeon makes an incision near the bunion, corrects the bone alignment, removes excess bone if needed, and stabilizes the joint with screws, wires, or plates.
- Procedure time: usually 45–90 minutes.
- Most patients can return home the same day.
Recovery & Rehabilitation
- Weight-bearing:Usually partial weight-bearing with special footwear or crutches for 4–6 weeks (depends on type of surgery).
- Stitches removal:10–14 days.
- Return to normal activities:6–8 weeks; sports and heavy activity may take longer.
- Physiotherapy:Strengthening and mobility exercises to restore function.

Like all surgical procedures, bunion surgery has some risks, including infection, stiffness, recurrence, nerve irritation, or delayed healing. However, with modern techniques and expert care at COSM, outcomes are highly successful and complications are uncommon.
