Trigger Finger

Trigger Finger

What is Trigger Finger?

Trigger finger (stenosing tenosynovitis) occurs when a finger tendon becomes swollen and inflamed, making it difficult to glide smoothly through its sheath. This causes the finger to get stuck in a bent position and then suddenly release, like a trigger being pulled and released.

It is often painful, most noticeable in the morning, and may improve after moving the finger around. The condition is more common in:

  • People with diabetes
  • Women
  • Individuals performing repetitive gripping activities

Symptoms

  • Finger stiffness, especially in the morning
  • Pain or tenderness in the palm at the base of the affected finger
  • Popping, catching, or clicking sensation when moving the finger
  • Finger locking in a bent position that may suddenly straighten

Treatment Options

Most cases of trigger finger can be managed with non-surgical treatments, though surgery may be required for persistent cases.

Non-Surgical Options:

  • Activity modification: Avoid or reduce activities that worsen symptoms.
  • Physical therapy (PT): Helps reduce swelling, restore smooth tendon motion, and strengthen finger muscles.
  • Ice and heat: Ice reduces swelling; heat improves blood flow and reduces stiffness.
  • Splinting: A finger splint reduces triggering episodes and allows the tendon to rest.
  • Medications: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or naproxen relieve pain and swelling.
  • Steroid injections: Corticosteroid injection into the tendon sheath can significantly reduce pain, swelling, and locking episodes.

Surgical Option:

  • Trigger Finger Release: If conservative measures fail, a minor surgical procedure is performed to release the tight tissue restricting tendon movement. This can be done through:
    • Traditional open surgery
    • Minimally invasive ultrasound-guided technique

Both methods aim to restore smooth tendon motion and relieve pain permanently.
