Carpal Tunnel Decompression
When non-surgical treatments for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome are no longer effective, surgery may be the best option to relieve nerve compression and restore hand function. The procedure is called Carpal Tunnel Release (CTR) or Carpal Tunnel Decompression.
What Is Carpal Tunnel Release Surgery?
Carpal tunnel release is a safe and effective procedure designed to: Relieve pressure on the median nerve
Reduce numbness, tingling, and pain
Restore hand strength and function
The surgeon achieves this by cutting the transverse carpal ligament (the “roof” of the tunnel). This creates more space inside the carpal tunnel, reducing pressure on the median nerve and improving blood flow.

Open Carpal Tunnel Release
- A small incision is made in the palm of your hand.
- The surgeon carefully divides the transverse carpal ligament to enlarge the tunnel.
- The ligament heals in a lengthened position, leaving more room for the nerve and tendons.

What to Expect During Surgery
- Usually performed as a day-care (outpatient) procedure.
- Done under either:
- Local anesthesia (numbing the hand/wrist, sometimes with light sedation), or
- General anesthesia (you are asleep).
- Takes about 20–30 minutes.
Recovery After Surgery
- Most patients return home the same day.
- Temporary soreness or stiffness in the hand is expected.
- Light hand use may begin within a few days; full strength returns gradually.
- Physiotherapy/hand exercises help speed up recovery.
- Long-term results are excellent, with significant improvement in pain, sensation, and hand function.
