Achilles Tendon Rupture
What is an Achilles Tendon Rupture?
The Achilles tendon is the largest and strongest tendon in the body, connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone. It plays a vital role in walking, running, and jumping.
An Achilles tendon rupture occurs when this tendon tears partially or completely, often during activities that involve sudden acceleration, jumping, or pivoting.
Causes and Risk Factors
- Sudden increase in physical activity
- Sports requiring sprinting or jumping (e.g., basketball, football, tennis)
- Falling or tripping
- Direct trauma to the tendon
- Risk factorsinclude:
- Age (commonly between 30–50 years)
- Male gender
- Previous tendon problems (tendinitis)
- Use of certain medications (steroids, fluoroquinolone antibiotics)
Symptoms of Achilles Tendon Rupture
- Sudden, sharp pain in the back of the ankle or calf (often described as being “kicked” from behind)
- A popping or snapping soundat the time of injury
- Swelling and bruising around the heel
- Difficulty walking or pushing off the foot
- Inability to stand on tiptoe on the injured leg
Diagnosis
- Physical examination:Doctor may perform the Thompson test (squeezing the calf to check for foot movement).
- Imaging:Ultrasound or MRI may be used to confirm the extent of tendon damage.
Treatment of Achilles Tendon Rupture
Non-Surgical Management
- Suitable for partial ruptures or patients not fit for surgery
- Immobilization:Walking boot with wedges inside the boot to allow tendon healing.
- Gradual rehabilitationwith physiotherapy to restore mobility and strength
Surgical Management
- Recommended for complete ruptures, young athletes, or active individuals
- Procedure:Suturing the torn tendon ends together
- Minimally invasive optionsmay be available
- Post-surgery: Immobilization followed by structured physiotherapy
Rehabilitation
Recovery typically takes 4–6 months, depending on severity and treatment choice.
Rehabilitation focuses on:
- Restoring calf muscle strength
- Improving ankle flexibility and balance
- Preventing re-rupture through a guided return-to-activity plan
