Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is one of the most common hand conditions, causing numbness, tingling, pain, and weakness in the hand and forearm. It occurs when the median nerve — a major nerve of the hand — is compressed as it passes through the carpal tunnel, a narrow passage in the wrist.

If left untreated, CTS can worsen over time and may even cause permanent nerve damage, loss of sensation, or hand weakness. That’s why early diagnosis and treatment are essential.

Symptoms

  • Numbness or tingling in the thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers
  • Burning or shock-like pain that may radiate up the forearm
  • Hand weakness or difficulty gripping objects
  • Clumsiness in fine movements (e.g., buttoning clothes)
  • Night-time symptoms (often worse while sleeping with bent wrists)
  • Relief by shaking or moving the hands

Causes and Risk Factors

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome often develops due to multiple contributing factors:

  • Repetitive hand use (typing, driving, sewing, mobile use, etc.)
  • Wrist position (prolonged bending or extension)
  • Heredity (naturally smaller carpal tunnel)
  • Pregnancy (hormonal changes leading to swelling)
  • Medical conditions – Diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid disorders
  • Age and Gender – More common in women and older adults

Diagnosis

Our specialists diagnose CTS with:

  • History & examination (checking numbness, weakness, or hand movements)
  • Nerve tests (NCS/EMG) to confirm nerve compression
  • Ultrasound or MRI in selected cases

Treatment Options

Non-Surgical Treatment (early or mild cases):

  • Wearing a wrist splint (especially at night)
  • Activity modification and posture correction
  • Nerve-gliding exercises
  • Steroid injections to reduce swelling
  • Medications for pain relief (NSAIDs)

Surgical Treatment (for persistent or severe cases):

  • Carpal Tunnel Release Surgery – A safe and effective procedure to relieve pressure on the median nerve.
    • Usually done as a day procedure
    • Minimally invasive (small incision)
    • Quick recovery with lasting relief
