What is a Wrist Ganglion?

wrist ganglion (or ganglion cyst) is a fluid-filled lump that develops near joints or tendons of the wrist. These cysts are noncancerous and usually harmless, but they may cause pain, weakness, or cosmetic concern. They are among the most common lumps found in the hand and wrist.

Causes & Risk Factors

The exact cause is not always known, but wrist ganglions are believed to form when joint or tendon linings bulge out and fill with fluid.
Risk factors include:

  • Repetitive wrist movements or overuse
  • Previous wrist injury
  • Age (more common in young adults)
  • Female gender (slightly higher risk)

Symptoms

  • Noticeable lump on the back (dorsal) or front (volar) side of the wrist
  • Size may increase with activity and shrink with rest
  • Pain or discomfort with wrist movement
  • Weakness or reduced grip strength in some cases
  • Cosmetic concern (visible swelling)

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is usually straightforward with a clinical examination.

  • Transillumination test: Light passes through the cyst confirming fluid content.
  • Imaging (Ultrasound/MRI): Used if the diagnosis is uncertain or to rule out other conditions.

Treatment Options

Most wrist ganglions are benign and may not need treatment unless they cause pain or functional problems.

Non-Surgical Treatments:

  • Observation (many cysts shrink or disappear on their own)
  • Wrist splinting to reduce irritation
  • Aspiration (drawing fluid out with a needle) – but recurrence is common
  • Corticosteroid injection (sometimes used after aspiration)

Surgical Treatment:

  • Excision (removal of the ganglion cyst and its stalk)
    • Usually done as an outpatient procedure
    • Low recurrence rate compared to aspiration
    • Relieves pain, restores wrist function, and improves appearance
