Hip Anatomy
The hip joint is a ball-and-socket synovial joint that connects the femur (thigh bone) to the pelvis. It provides stability while allowing a wide range of motion essential for walking, running, and sitting. The joint is composed of the femoral head (ball), which fits into the acetabulum (socket) of the pelvis. Strong ligaments, tendons, and muscles surround the joint to provide strength and support.
Key structures include:
- Femoral head and acetabulum
- Articular cartilage
- Ligaments (iliofemoral, pubofemoral, ischiofemoral)
- Labrum
- Surrounding muscles such as gluteals, iliopsoas, and quadriceps
